Breast Screening: Keep an Eye Out for Your Invitation

Please keep an eye out for your breast screening invitation.

This year, it’s our surgery’s turn for routine breast screening. Breast screening is organised in regular rounds, with different GP practices and areas being invited at different times. The programme then moves on to other areas before coming back around again.

This means that eligible patients registered at our surgery will receive an invitation from the local breast screening service when it is their turn to be screened.

So, if you are eligible for breast screening, please keep an eye out for your invitation over the coming months.

Why is breast screening important?

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK. Finding breast cancer early can make it easier to treat and can improve the chances of successful treatment.

A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray of the breasts which can detect changes that are too small to see or feel yourself. This means screening can sometimes find breast cancer before you notice any symptoms or changes.

Even if you feel completely well and have no concerns about your breasts, it is still important to attend when invited.

What should I do when I receive my invitation?

📅 Attend your appointment when you are invited. If the appointment time is not convenient, use the contact details on your invitation to arrange an alternative appointment.

💗 Remember that screening is for people who feel well. You don’t need to have any symptoms or concerns to benefit from screening.

🔎 Know your breasts — breast screening does not replace being aware of changes. If you notice a new lump, a change in the size or shape of your breast, skin or nipple changes, unusual nipple discharge, or any other change that is unusual for you, please contact the surgery rather than waiting for your screening appointment.

If you receive an invitation, please take the opportunity to attend.

Your mammogram could detect a change before you notice anything yourself, giving you the best possible opportunity for early treatment if something is found.
