Who is eligible for the bowel cancer screening test?

In England, everyone aged 50-74 years is eligible for the test.

How often are bowel cancer screening tests sent out?

Every 2 years to those who are eligible. If a patient would like one and is over 75 years of age, they need to call 0800 707 6060 to request a test.

Are there accessible test instructions available?

Can patients who have had bowel cancer in the past do a bowel cancer screening test?

Yes, they can.

Can patients who have completed a Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) test at their GP’s request earlier in the year do the test?

Yes, they can.

Can patients complete the test if they have an ileostomy bag?

No, the patient will not have a functioning colon, so screening is neither appropriate nor possible. If it is permanent, they should contact 0800 707 6060 to be removed from the re-call list.

Can patients complete the test if they have a stoma bag?

Yes, the sample can be collected directly from the bag.

How long do unused bowel cancer screening tests last?

Tests expire in a couple of months. There is an expiry date on the tube. Patients need to call 0800 707 6060 for a replacement.

How long should patients have to wait to receive their results?

 Patients should receive results in 2 weeks. They should call the helpline if they don’t receive any results in that time.

Can patients receive their results in a language other than English?

No, but patients can ring the helpline number and use their language service to have their results letter translated to them over the phone.

What happens if a patient is informed that they need further tests?

The patient will usually need to have a colonoscopy, which is where a camera is used to check inside the patient’s bowel. The patient will receive correspondence to book this in. The patient can call 0800 707 6060 if they have any questions.
